The first thing you should do when buying a Beetle, is to check for rust. VW's are known to rust so start looking for any surface rust. Check the bumpers, tail pipes and the mufflers. Also pay some attention to the running board section. Look underneath the car. The area where the running boards are bolted into is very crutial. The heater channels are also known to rot in the corners. Same thing for the battery area under the back seat. This will rot from all the battery acid from over the years. -

Tip 3
When buying a Beetle, you should have a look at the front of the car. Have a look underneath the front fender. Check this area for cracking or holes. This is another crutial area because the heat chanel comes all the way up to here. Luckily fenders are cheap, so you can always replace them when painting your car. Also pay some attention to the seals and the rubbers. They are always black. When they have the colour of your car, they had a bad paint job. -

Check of the scrapers on the window area are intact. These rubber scrapers can be very hard to replace. If you want to change the rubber scrapers, you have to take the whole door panel of. You also going to have to take the vent window out. Also pay some attention to the chrome sections. How is the chrome molding on the car? How are the door handles? How is the emblem? -
Tip 5
Now lets have a look at the inside of your Beetle. How are the seats? Check the padding. Are there any rips or tears? Also check the headliner. Are there any stains, rips or tears? Luckily headliners are very cheap. You have some very descent after market headliners available on the market. -
Tip 6
This video will give you some extra tips when you are buying a Beetle. Check of the horn works, check of the wipers work, check of the little dome light works. Open the gloves box door and also ckeck if the radio works. -
Tip 7
Make sure you have the engine seal in the bug. The engine seal will keep the heat out of the bug from the muffler. Push the gass pedal one or two times. Then start the engine. Normally it will start immediately. When the engine doens't start: ask the seller why! Also see if there is any smoke coming out of the tail pipes. Beetles are known for having smoke coming out of there tail pipes. Make sure there's no engine light on or an oil light on the dashboard. -
Tip 8
Open the trunk and take the spare tire out. Have a look at this area because it's a known area for rusting.
